The circulating video on various social media platforms captures Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa delivering a resolute message, admonishing NRM historical figures for their persistent actions undermining the authority of the parliament he now presides over. Tayebwa, who represents Ruhinda North in Mitooma district, assumed the pivotal role of Deputy Speaker following the lamentable passing of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah in March 2022. Transitioning from his previous role as government Chief Whip, Tayebwa’s candidacy for Deputy Speaker emerged after Anita Among’s elevation to the esteemed position of Speaker.

Both Tayebwa and Anita, who were formerly associated with the FDC, have now aligned themselves with the NRM, a favored political faction. Tayebwa emphasizes that although Uganda continues to grapple with challenges, the solutions required have evolved. He argues that while the issues of 1986, when rebel forces made the transition from the bush to governance, may still resonate, the approaches needed to address them have evolved significantly over time.

Expressing his exasperation, Tayebwa dismisses the narrative often propagated by veterans of the Museveni era, which glorifies their armed struggle. He contends that dwelling on past conflicts holds minimal relevance to contemporary debates and the pressing issues facing Ugandan society today.

Tayebwa further challenges assertions that the significance of Parliament has diminished with the waning influence of revolutionary figures. He highlights the qualifications and expertise of the current generation, which is characterized by a high level of education. He calls for a critical examination of those who previously held positions of power despite lacking formal education, drawing a sharp contrast between their leadership style and the competency of today’s skilled professionals serving in government roles.
