The recent interview conducted by FRANCE 24 TV with Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, Uganda’s prominent opposition figure, shed light on his impassioned call for a movement centered around “civil disobedience, a moral uprising, a revolution” within Uganda. Wine’s advocacy stems from concerns over President Yoweri Museveni’s 38-year rule and the government’s crackdown on dissenting voices.

Expressing grave apprehensions about his safety, Wine recounted his recent house arrest and the tragic death of his driver in 2018, attributing these incidents to the regime’s determination to quash opposition.

The arrest in 2018 prompted protests in Kampala and beyond, with demands for his release echoed on social media through the #FreeBobiWine campaign. Musicians, activists, and politicians alike rallied behind him, condemning his treatment in an open letter.

In the face of treason charges levied against him and 30 others, including legislators, concerns about a broader crackdown on dissent intensified. With Uganda gearing up for its 2026 elections, Wine’s message reverberates among those advocating for change and reform in the political landscape.

Bobi Wine underscores the urgency of addressing systemic issues and upholding democratic principles in Uganda’s governance. Despite ongoing tensions, leaders within the National Unity Platform (NUP) maintain that Wine’s call for peaceful resistance resonates with citizens demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders.
