Former State minister for Lands, Idah Nantaba and a landlord on Sunday evening survived being lynched by angry land tenants in Lugasa village, Kahonza Sub County in Kayunga District.

In order to see his tenants, Ms. Nantaba, the woman member of parliament for Kayunga District, went with Rev. Can Yusuf Turyomwe, who asserts to be the owner of a 40-acre parcel of land in Lugasa village that is disputed. During the meeting, one of the local leaders tries to calm down an enraged Nantaba.

Can Turyomwe, 80, said that the purpose of the gathering at Lugasa Primary School was to persuade the tenants to allow him to open the limits of his land. Following that, he would talk with them about the amount of busuulu (annual ground rent) they would pay him. However, tempers flared after Ms Nantaba grabbed a microphone from the Kayonza Sub County LCIII chairman, Mr John Muramuzi and started addressing the residents.

She accused Mr Muramuzi and Mr Charles Tebandeke (Member of Parliament for Bbaale County in Kayunga District) of taking bribes from alleged land grabbers and abetting acts of land grabbing.

“Tebandeke tabled a motion before Parliament to sell off Bajjo Central Forest reserve after he was given a bribe and your LCIII chairman who is now pretending to be fighting for you so that you are not evicted from your land has been asking for bribes from this landlord. I have evidence [indicating that] the LCIII chairman was given a bribe of Shs3 million,” Ms Nantaba said.

But, Mr. Tebandeke and Mr. Muramuzi, who were present at the meeting, did not take well to this. They denied the allegations made by Ms. Nantaba as untrue. In addition, the irate tenants denied Ms. Nantaba’s assertions and insisted that she deal with the Lugasa land issue, which was the impetus for the gathering.

“You tell lies! Tenants chortled, “We want you to talk about issues related to this land solely.”

After losing her temper, Ms. Nantaba accused the tenants of not appreciating her efforts in defending their rights. They laughed at her assertions and she paced with the microphone in the direction of one of the female renters. The woman was only recognized as Shakirah by Ms. Nantaba when she approached her, and then the enraged villagers attacked Ms. Nantaba.

The other group pounced on the elderly landlord and started slapping him before Ms Nantaba’s Special Forces Command (SFC) guards swung into action to rescue her. In an effort to save their principal and the landlord, the guards physically assaulted a few of the inhabitants. Can Turyomwe was in danger as Ms. Nantaba left the scene under heavy protection as tempers continued to rise.

Nonetheless, he was saved by Kayonza police officers who promptly arrived at the site. Can Turyomwe was driven to the Kayunga Central Police Station, where Mr. Raymond Odong, the Officer in Charge, requested that he produce documentation proving he was the landowner. According to Can Turyomwe, he purchased the land in 2018 from the late Kitaka Gawera. But Mr. Tebandeke asserted that Can Turyomwe obtained the land title fraudulently and that it ought to be revoked to protect the tenants from being evicted.

After the altercation, when contacted , Ms Nantaba who accused tenants of politicising the land issue said she had backed off the matter. Ms Nantaba was on August 15, 2012 appointed state minister for lands by President Museveni in a cabinet reshuffle after she claimed to fight against land grabbing in Kayunga District. She was later appointed State Minister for ICT in another Cabinet reshuffle after what Mr Museveni termed as “mixing politics” in land matters. In 2019, she was dropped as minister.
