President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda receives a monthly salary of approximately 3.6 million Ugandan shillings (around $980).

While this salary seems modest compared to other African leaders, it does not fully capture his financial benefits as president, which include significant allowances and other perks.Museveni’s allowances cover various essential expenses associated with his role, including housing, travel, and security.

As a sitting president, he is provided with state-sponsored accommodation, ensuring his safety and comfort. This often includes a well-furnished official residence, which alleviates personal housing costs.

In addition to housing, the allowances typically cover transportation for official duties, personal security details, and other operational costs necessary for the efficient functioning of his office. However, the exact figures for these allowances are not typically disclosed to the public, leading to speculation regarding the total financial package he receives.

This structure of compensation reflects a broader trend in Uganda and other African nations, where political leaders often enjoy substantial benefits despite relatively low base salaries. The public’s perception of these arrangements is often mixed, especially in light of Uganda’s economic challenges, which can make the disparity between political salaries and the average wage particularly pronounced.

Speaking at a recent Ugandan Prisons event, the president revealed that his salary was increased from Shs. 150,000 which he was getting at the start of his tenure.

“Between 1986 and 1995 I was getting Shs. 150,000. That was my salary. But I was the president of Uganda and Commander in Chief. Those who doubted it, some of them are not here,” he said.

“My authority doesn’t depend on the salary.”

In 1996, Museveni said, he was “tricked” by MPs” to increase his salary to Shs 3.6million.” At the time, he said, they had agreed that no government worker should be earning more than this amount.Yet shortly afterwards, he said, the same government officials went on to limitlessly increase their salaries.

“They asked me to increase mine as well but I said ‘No, I don’t want your bad luck,’” Museveni revealed.

“I still get Shs. 3.6 million and I give 20% to the NRM Secretariat, leaving me with Shs 2.7 million. But I am the president of Uganda. If you are not sure about that you will find out,” he said.
