Parliament descended into a maelstrom of heated exchanges and political brinkmanship yesterday, as Speaker Anita Among found herself cornered by relentless Members of Parliament from the National Unity Platform (NUP), demanding accountability for the dramatic and controversial arrest of former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.

According to Parliament Watch, the Speaker, clearly unsettled by the barrage of questions and accusations, was forced to instruct the government to present a comprehensive statement next week, detailing the chilling circumstances under which Besigye and Kamulegeya were allegedly abducted in Kenya.

The two were reportedly snatched in a covert operation while attending a book launch organized by former Kenyan Justice Minister, Martha Karua, only to resurface in the dock of Uganda’s Military Court Martial, raising eyebrows across the region.

The drama in the House was sparked by Ssemujju Nganda (Kira Municipality), who lambasted the government for what he described as a brazen violation of international law.

“How does Uganda justify conducting clandestine operations in a foreign country, kidnapping opposition leaders, and dragging them before a military court?” Nganda thundered, his words ricocheting through the chambers.

The silence from the government benches was deafening, leaving the Speaker visibly frustrated as she struggled to contain the growing unrest.

NUP MPs, smelling blood, pounced on the opportunity to amplify the issue, demanding clarity on why Besigye, a stalwart of Uganda’s opposition and promoter of the newly minted People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was subjected to such treatment.

Among, clearly caught off guard, initially attempted to deflect the issue, suggesting that the matter required more “consultation.”

Her hesitation, however, emboldened the opposition, forcing her to concede to their demands for a formal government explanation.

“This is a matter of national and international importance,” Nganda declared triumphantly. “The people deserve answers!”

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, then directed the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a comprehensive statement regarding the arrest of four-time presidential candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, in Nairobi, Kenya.

However, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua cautioned that it would be premature for Parliament to condemn the actions of Kenya before a court ruling is given, as the matter is already before court.

Despite this, Speaker Anita Among emphasised the need for transparency and accountability.

“I direct the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a detailed statement regarding the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye,” she said. “This statement should be presented without going into the merits of the case.”
