Yoweri Museveni is one of the most known Presidents not only in Uganda and Africa but also in the entire world.
That is because he has been in power for so long because Ugandans love and like him thus, they have been electing him back in office during all the general elections since he took over power in 1986.
While that is the case, today business was not as usual for the Head of State as his own words came back to haunt him. President Yoweri Museveni has found himself at the center of a heated online debate after a 12-year-old video resurfaced showing him expressing reluctance to lead beyond the age of 75.
The video, shared by NTV Uganda on X (formerly Twitter), has stirred up controversy, especially after the Ugandan leader celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
In the 2012 interview on NTV’s On The Spot, Museveni said he wouldn’t want to rule past 75, citing concerns about a leader’s capacity to lead effectively.
“I think after 75, the vigour won’t be there. If you want very active leaders, it’s good to have those below 75,” Museveni stated.
When asked by the interviewer, “so are you saying that you won’t go beyond 75 years old sir?”
Museveni quickly replied, “no, not at all”.
The resurfaced video has sparked heated reactions online. Many have slammed Museveni, accusing him of being a liar and clinging to power despite his previous statements.
Some users expressed frustration, saying Museveni’s long rule contradicts his 2012 remarks.
At the moment, Yoweri Museveni is 80 years old and guess what? He is still in office as the 9th President of Uganda.
