The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has categorically denied allegations that the National Unity Platform (NUP) party manipulated the 2021 presidential election results, stealing one million votes from President Yoweri Museveni.
Richard Baabo, EC Director of Operations, addressed the claims during a Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) dialogue focused on preventing electoral conflict. Baabo stated, “We’ve thoroughly reviewed the electoral process and find no basis for the accusations.”
This response comes amid President Museveni’s recent suggestions that NUP undermined his victory. The remarks have sparked intense debate, with opposition members and civil society groups demanding an investigation.
Civil society leaders emphasized the need for independent institutions to prevent such controversies and ensure public trust. They called for reforms to safeguard transparency and accountability, particularly in key agencies.
“The Electoral Commission must operate without undue influence to guarantee every vote is protected,” said a civil society representative.
“All stakeholders, including security agencies, must uphold the election process’s integrity.”
As Uganda prepares for future elections, the role of independent institutions remains crucial. The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering dialogue, transparency, and cooperation to avoid post-election conflicts.
The EC’s statement aims to quell tensions, but the issue remains a hot topic in Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
