Embattled former Leader of Opposition and Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mathias Mpuuga has sent the last warning to Bobi Wine and his colleagues of National Unity Platform against calling him a corrupt person which he says taints his name because he’s a clean man.

According to Mpuuga who was speaking to NTV Uganda over the weekend, he says he received the service award as a former leader of opposition and will even get another as a former commission which his term ends.Political analysts have discovered two things surrounding Mpuuga’s service award.

Him and the other three back bench commissioners received the awarded themselves service award (kasiimo) even before their term of office elapses. Mpuuga got the cash even before his term came to an end.

The Uganda Law society has since indicated that the service award was illegal. Even former leaders of opposition Nandala Mafabi, Ogenga Latigo, Winnie Kiiza, Betty Aol Ochan, Philip Wafula Ogula have all said they were not awarded and only moved away empty handed unlike Mpuuga who received the service award even before ending his tenure as Leader of Opposition.

Bobi Wine’s NUP parted ways with Mpuuga saying the award he got tantamount to corruption, they wrote to Speaker of parliament withdrawing their endorsement of him as commissioner of parliament after Mpuuga declined to resign.

Bobi Wine would later suspend Mpuuga who being Deputy President of NUP in Buganda. This has caused a tiff between Mpuuga, legislators who believe in him like Abed Bwanika, Joyce Bagala and NUP ahead of the 2026 general elections which according to rumors Mpuuga is looking at challenging Bobi Wine for the NUP ticket as the party’s presidential candidate.

Mpuuga now says Bobi Wine and all those who call him corrupt have had enough time to reflect and apologize for maligning and annoying him with claims that he’s corrupt and if they continue, he’s ready to drag them to court so that he gets justice.

“Hon Kadaga gets pension as former Deputy Speaker and as former Speaker, Honorable Ssekandi also gets pension as former speaker and as former Vice president, what makes Mathias Mpuuga former leader of opposition corrupt. I want you to host me with some of those guys who normally accuse me of being corrupt, i want them to say that to my face. But when time comes, they will face the law because i have given them enough time”- said Mpuuga

The feud between the National Unity Platform (NUP) and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga has festered for months and all indications are that it will go on until the 2026 elections.

But as this feud turns Masaka into a 2026 ‘battleground state’ that is threatening to upset alliances and is pitting institutions like the Buganda monarchy and NUP, a Buganda-dominated party, against each other, what lies ahead for all contenders; including the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party?

A look at the polling data from the 2021 election shows why Masaka matters and why it has become front and centre in the election roadmap.Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine notched 73% of the vote beating President Yoweri Museveni who got just 25%.

Bobi Wine ate into Museveni’s vote margins because in 2016, Museveni had fought competitively with Dr. Kizza Besigye scoring 50% and 45% respectively. In 2011, Museveni carried the district with 53% against Besigye’s 37%.

With the red wave in 2021, Museveni settled for the crumbs as he couldn’t even get an NRM MP from the district while his party also lost many seats to NUP in the Buganda region which Masaka is at the heart of.

The stakes are even higher when it comes to the regional vote (the central region which comprises nearly two dozen districts). Bobi Wine got 64% almost doubling Museveni’s vote at 33% according to data by the Electoral Commission. The trend shows that Museveni’s political fortunes have been on a downward spiral in the area.

In effect, Museveni and the NRM face the worst possible outcome at the next turn which is why NUP is not taking chances with the ongoing schisms.
