The Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer for Kisoro district, Dan Nayebare,  has declared Independent candidate Akifeza Grace Ngabirano as the winner of the District Woman Member of Parliament seat for Kisoro District.

The Kisoro Woman MP seat fell vacant following the untimely death of Sarah Mateke, who was the area legislator. She was also the Minister of State for Defence.

Akifeza polled 50,459 votes in the Thursday by-election, beating her closest rival, Kabagyeni Rose, the NRM candidate, who polled 44,982 votes.

According to the EC, the total number of valid votes cast for candidates were 97,056.

Although the by-election attracted six contestants, the main competition was between Kabagyeni  and Akifeza. Kabagyeni defeated Akifeza in the controversial NRM primaries.

According to EC’s Nayebare, NUP’s  Zubedi Sultana Salim  finished 3rd with 903 votes, while UPC candidate Ingabire Mable got 362 votes.  Musanase Juliet of FDC got 193 votes while Cyimpaye Aisha of PPP came last after polling 157 votes
