In this afternoon’s news, the pressure group associated with Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba, son of President Museveni and presidential advisor on special operations, has undergone a rebranding, changing its name from the MK Movement to the Patriotic League of Uganda.
Along with the name change, they have also updated their logo, replacing Muhoozi’s photo with that of a lion, while retaining the yellow color associated with the NRM, from which they draw much of their support.
Announcing the transformation, Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, a member of Muhoozi’s Central Committee, disclosed that they have shifted from a pressure group advocating for Muhoozi to succeed his father as president to becoming a civic organization.
“We hereby constitute ourselves into a civic organization and assume and adopt a new name and identity, the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), which is the main aim of working towards receiving Ugandans, in a spirit of God citizenship national pride, national service, protection of persons, combating corruption and wastage of public services and protection of the environment”-Mawanda revealed.
Unlike Bobi Wine’s People Power movement, which transformed into a political party with the involvement of Mzee Moses Kibalama, the MK Movement has not directly evolved into a political party but into a civic organization, with potential future rebranding as the election season approaches.
Through the MK Movement, Muhoozi Kainerugaba has been holding political rallies and garnering support, despite being an active-duty army officer prohibited from engaging in overt political activities.
The rebranding event was attended by key Museveni ministers including Godfrey Kabyanga and Frank Tumwebaze, as well as NRM’s Vice Chairperson Eastern Capt Mike Mukula, parliament members, and Muhoozi supporters.
