In an unprecedented twist of events within the Ugandan political arena, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has formally put forward Rosemary Olwoc, the daughter of the late Cecilia Ogwal, as the rightful heir poised to perpetuate her mother’s enduring legacy in the picturesque Dokolo district.
Cecilia Ogwal, a luminary and influential figure in Ugandan political circles, drew her last breath at the age of 78 after bravely facing cancer in India on January 18. The poignant moment of her final resting place was observed in Lira on January 27.
Embarking on her notable political journey in 1996 as the Lira Municipality MP, Cecilia Ogwal’s unwavering commitment to public service propelled her to victory in securing the Dokolo Woman MP seat in 2005. Her tenure in this role endured until her recent demise, during which she gracefully transitioned from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) over the course of her illustrious career.
The transitional ceremony, held at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, witnessed party leader Patrick Oboi Amuriat paying tribute to Cecilia Ogwal’s extensive years of dedicated service. Amuriat vehemently criticized the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), highlighting concerns about familial dominance within the NRM and advocating fervently for a more democratic political landscape.
Stepping into the formidable shoes of her mother’s political heritage, Rosemary Olwoc expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support bestowed upon her by the FDC. She solemnly pledged to persist in the tireless advocacy for the people of Dokolo, marking a significant generational shift within the party and a steadfast commitment to upholding the principles championed by Cecilia Ogwal.
The strategic decision of the FDC to formally endorse Rosemary Olwoc as their candidate for Dokolo not only attests to the party’s unwavering confidence in her capabilities but also signifies a calculated move aimed at addressing the distinct political needs of the Dokolo constituency.
As the dynamic political landscape continues to evolve, there is an undeniable sense of anticipation within the Dokolo constituency, eagerly anticipating a revitalized perspective under the capable leadership of Cecilia Ogwal’s esteemed daughter. This transition marks a crucial chapter in the ongoing narrative of Ugandan politics, promising a renewed vigor and commitment to the principles of democracy.
