Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform, has disclosed plans for mass protests against President Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule in Uganda, even before the 2026 general elections.

In an interview with FRANCE24 Television Channel, Bobi Wine expressed concerns that President Museveni is poised to extend his tenure to 45 years, similar to his past actions in 2016 and 2021. He emphasized the constitutional right of Ugandans to peacefully protest and advocate for change.

“While there’s an election in 2026, we strongly believe that is intending to do the same what he did in 2016 and 2021 therefore, we are mobilizing the people of Uganda to affirm their authority to raise up non violently and unarmed because it is provided for in our constitution to throw out Gen Museveni”-Bobi Wine said.

Bobi Wine highlighted the opposition’s call for civil disobedience and a revolution to end Museveni’s prolonged rule, which began in 1986 after a guerrilla war against the Obote Regime.

In the event that the revolution does not succeed before 2026, Bobi Wine stated their intention to utilize all constitutional means, including contesting elections, to challenge Museveni’s authority. He emphasized the potential of elections to serve as a catalyst for the desired revolution.

“We are calling for an uprising has not happened in 2026 we have made it clear that we are going to every moral and every constitutional method to procure change and yes if we go into an election, it will be as a means and spark of the revolution that we so badly want”-Bobi Wine told France 24.
