Deputy Defence Spokesperson Colonel Deo Akiiki has defended the controversial arrest of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye from Kenya, emphasizing its necessity for Uganda’s security and stability.
Speaking during an interview on Next Radio on Saturday morning, Akiiki stated that Besigye’s apprehension aligns with Uganda’s commitment to maintaining regional safety and enforcing the law.
“I can assure you the arrest of Kizza Besigye was very necessary, and it shall be proved in the courts of law,” Akiiki said.
Besigye is currently facing multiple charges, including unlawful possession of firearms.
His recent arrest in Kenya has sparked debate, with human rights activists and opposition groups condemning what they see as a violation of international norms and the targeting of dissent.
However, Akiiki dismissed such criticisms, asserting the government’s right to act decisively against activities perceived as threats to national or regional security.
“No matter who you are and which country you are, if anything you are doing is injurious to this country or the region, then we shall come for you and there are quite a lot of arrangements that allow us to do so,” he stated.
The arrest has drawn widespread attention, further amplifying the strained relationship between Uganda’s government and its opposition leaders.
