Residents in Kamuli are calling for an unequivocal apology from Speaker of Parliament Anita Among over remarks perceived as attacks against her predecessor, Rebecca Kadaga. They allege Among initiated a social media campaign to undermine Kadaga’s leadership, sparking anger among Kamuli Municipality voters.
During recent events in Bukedea and Buyende, Among’s statements further fueled discontent. In Bukedea, she referred to unnamed “old women” leading a smear campaign against her and Parliament. Similar sentiments echoed in Buyende, where Among suggested a Kampuli native was opposing her.
Despite not naming Kadaga directly, Kamuli voters interpreted Among’s comments as targeting their former MP. Opposition and ruling party supporters united to condemn Among’s remarks, led by NUP’s Moses Bigirwa.
Voters demand a public apology from Among, threatening to block her access to Buyende, highlighting Kadaga’s pivotal role in Kamuli’s development, including infrastructure, education, and employment opportunities.
The community appeals to the Busoga Kingdom to intervene, citing Kadaga’s efforts in stabilizing the kingdom. They urge the kingdom to denounce Among’s actions and demand an apology or an alternative route for her travels.
The Speaker of Parliament holds a crucial position in the legislative body, serving as the presiding officer and the highest authority within the Parliament. Their primary role is to ensure that parliamentary proceedings run smoothly and efficiently. This involves maintaining order during debates, enforcing parliamentary rules and procedures, and moderating discussions to facilitate constructive dialogue among members. Additionally, the Speaker represents the Parliament both domestically and internationally, embodying its collective authority and serving as a symbol of parliamentary independence and integrity.
Beyond their procedural duties, the Speaker of Parliament plays a significant role in shaping the legislative agenda and guiding the direction of parliamentary business. They have the power to determine which bills are debated, prioritize certain issues for discussion, and allocate time for parliamentary committees to conduct inquiries and investigations. Moreover, the Speaker often serves as a liaison between the Parliament and other branches of government, fostering cooperation and coordination in the formulation and implementation of public policies. In essence, the Speaker’s role extends beyond mere procedural oversight to encompass broader leadership responsibilities in upholding democratic principles, promoting accountability, and advancing the interests of the nation.
It will be good if she apologizes
