In a stunning revelation, Ugandan security forces, in tandem with the Finance Intelligence Authority (FIA), recently descended upon Mutundwe Christian Fellowship church, seeking answers from its enigmatic leader, Pastor Tom Mugerwa.

The impromptu meeting aimed to unravel the mystique surrounding hundreds of billions of shillings languishing in the church’s bank accounts across Kampala’s commercial banks, including Stanbic.

Sources intimate with the matter divulged that telecommunications giants, MTN and Airtel Uganda, had also raised red flags regarding the astronomical sums flooding the church’s mobile money lines daily. That every day, hundreds of millions of shillings come through those lines often exceeding the maximum limit that a mobile money line is permitted to receive.

“We have a special arrangement with the church for each line to accommodate a maximum of Shs25m daily but the ceiling is always hit and exhausted by lunch time every day and they have several lines used to collect that tithe and offertory. We are in the process to enlarge their ceiling,” says a manager at one of the mobile money services-offering telecoms.

Churchgoers always struggle to send their tithe and offertory especially those trying to deposit the same after 12pm onwards. As churchgoers struggled to send their tithe and offertory, especially after 12 pm, the church’s coffers continued to swell.

Worshippers could also utilize Western Union and other money transfer services or make cash transfers directly into the church’s bank account. Hundreds of devotees thronged Mutundwe daily for prayers, contributing to the staggering amounts pouring into the church’s coffers.

Hundreds of faithful followers throng the church daily for prayers, offering their contributions in cash, which are then banked under the guidance of Patrick Kisitu. As a result, hundreds of millions of shillings flow into the church’s accounts, jointly signed by Pastor Tom and his wife Justine.

They sold tens of thousands of calendars, adorned with Pastor Tom and his wife Justine’s photo, complete with telephone lines for worshippers to send their offertories and tithes. By the time management realized the fraud, the baferes had harvested billions of shillings. In a surprising turn of events, Pastor Tom, renowned for preaching forgiveness, chose not to report the matter to the Police.

Instead, a campaign was launched through church services and media platforms to expose the baferes and disassociate the church from the calendars and mobile money lines. Pastor Tom Mugerwa personally addressed the issue, clarifying the church’s stance and warning followers of the scam.
