Security sources have disclosed that Dr. Kizza Besigye’s arrest followed detailed monitoring by Ugandan security operatives after receiving intelligence from agents at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about his planned trip to Kenya.

The opposition leader had traveled to Nairobi to attend the launch of a memoir by Kenyan politician Martha Karua, titled Against the Tide: My Journey on a Less Trodden Path. The book highlights Karua’s dedication to social justice and equality.

Reports indicate that top Ugandan security officials, including the Police, Special Forces Command, Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), and Internal Security Organisation, convened in Kampala to map out a strategy for monitoring Besigye’s movements in Kenya.

The operation was executed with the assistance of Kenyan security agencies, who closely observed him throughout the trip, including during the book launch.

According to sources, the Kampala meeting directed DIS to lead the operation, which culminated in Dr. Besigye’s arrest. However, it remains unclear whether he was transported back to Uganda by road or air.

Dr. Besigye’s wife, Ms. Winnie Byanyima, expressed concerns on social media, alleging that her husband had been abducted by Ugandan authorities.

A security spokesperson confirmed his arrest and stated that he was taken to the Army Court Martial but declined to provide further details.
