Officer In-Charge of Upper Prison Luzira, Brayn Mbazira, has issued a directive to heighten prison security following escalating tensions among National Unity Platform (NUP) political detainees. The unrest stemmed from disagreements among prisoners regarding the recent visit of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, and other opposition lawmakers.
Reliable sources within Upper Prison disclosed to our correspondents that the situation unfolded as prisoners aligned with Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) and the NUP began accusing each other following Ssenyonyi’s selective meetings with inmates.
The discontent among NUP detainees stemmed from Ssenyonyi’s decision to meet only a select few, namely Ibrahim Muwonge and another prisoner named Opio, neglecting the broader group. This sparked resentment as they felt marginalized and overlooked.
Furthermore, NUP detainees expressed dissatisfaction with Ssenyonyi’s failure to provide essential supplies such as soap, sugar, salt, and financial assistance to all inmates, instead favoring Muwonge and Opio.
Tensions escalated within the prison when it was revealed that Muwonge, allegedly affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), enjoyed preferential treatment and was relocated to a section with more liberties, known as Boma, away from stricter conditions in Ward 3.
Similarly, Opio, the other inmate visited by Ssenyonyi, was transferred from Upper Prison to Murchison Bay, prompting suspicions of undisclosed arrangements.
Allegations surfaced suggesting that Muwonge and Opio were coerced into meeting Ssenyonyi to secure potential presidential pardons, a notion fueled by rumors of imminent pardons for select inmates willing to cooperate with authorities.
Amidst these developments, accusations of vandalism, particularly the destruction of electricity poles, were leveled against Muwonge and other NUP supporters, resulting in their incarceration at Luzira Prison.
As rumors circulated regarding potential pardons in exchange for collaboration as state witnesses, divisions emerged within the NUP detainee community, exacerbated by uncertainty about their future.
Recent reports indicate that some NUP prisoners have sought solace in the company of Charles Olim (Sipapa), a prominent figure facing charges of aggravated robbery, highlighting their disillusionment with the party leadership’s failure to address their grievances.
Despite internal strife, sources within the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament assert that Ssenyonyi remains committed to advocating for the release of all political detainees, commencing with efforts before the General Court Martial.
