Tension erupted at the Lango Cultural Centre in Lira City when Uganda’s former deputy ambassador to the United States, Dickson Ogwang Okul, drew a pistol after being asked to leave a meeting on November 17, 2024.

The meeting, attended by mostly elders from the region, was aimed at preparing delegates from Lango for the upcoming Ateker Festival in Soroti, set to begin on November 26, 2024.

Okul, who is currently serving as Uganda’s Charge d’Affaires in Khartoum, arrived uninvited with two bodyguards.

The situation quickly escalated when he was asked to leave the gathering due to his uninvited presence. In an unexpected move, Okul drew a pistol, sparking a physical struggle with security operatives and civilians who attempted to disarm him.

Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as Okul resisted the efforts to disarm him before he was eventually subdued by security personnel.

The altercation has sparked a wave of concern among the public, particularly with the upcoming Ateker Festival, where the Lango region is expected to showcase its cultural heritage.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but the incident has raised questions about Okul’s behavior and his role in the current leadership conflict within Lango cultural affairs.
