The Deputy RDC of Kiboga district, Mr. Namanya Jeremy has cautioned head teachers against chasing children away from government schools for school fees citing the Presidential directives on free education for children in UPE and USE schools.

This followed complaints from students he recieved while interacting with the students and school administration of Kapeke Seed school in Kapeke Subcounty, Kiboga District. The students accused the school administration of being harsh to their parents and chasing them away from the school for failure to pay fees.

While meeting the school administration and staff, Mr. Namanya cautioned the team against charging parents in government schools and pledged to work with the school administration in cases of negligent parents who fail to take their children to school.

“The contract is between the parent and the school. Why then do you chase the student away who was not privy to this contract? The constitution and childrens act places an obligation on the parents to take care of their children. Government has already met you half way and made education free.” He Said.

“Any parent who fails to take their child to school is a criminal and as the Office of the RDC, we pledge to work with the school administration to reign in on these errant parents but please, do not send the children away from school for failure to pay fees.”

On their part, the school administration thanked RDC Namanya for the gesture and pledged to improve in the gaps that had been identified during the engagement. The staff also complained about the attitude of a section of the parents in the community towards sending their children to school.

“Most parents from the cattle keeping community are not keen on sending their children to school because despite being uneducated, they’ve managed to amass some wealth through cattle bussiness. They see no need in taking children to school”

Another teacher complained on the disparities in salaries between the arts and science teachers which had caused low morale amongst the arts teachers.

RDC Namanya relayed the fears of the teachers and advised them to remain committed, patient and continue advocating for their demands in an patient and organised manner.

“We are blessed to have a President who listens. Your concerns are very well known by the President and in due course, all will be well. You simply need to be patient and advocate for your demands in an organised manner. Remember that you are the envy of so many out there who would want to be where you are. So, continue serving deligently knowing that the President is aware of your needs”.

Kapeke seed school is one of the 3 seed schools in the district that were established by the President to serve underprivileged communities and resource centers for the wider education system.

In a related development, the RDC has ordered an audit on Bamusuta Secondary School after numerous complaints were reported to the office of the RDC by parents over exorbitant charges by the school administration.

Speaking to this news agency, Namanya informed us that the next course of action will be informed by the audit report.

“We want our next course of action to be informed by the findings from the Audit report…we shall keep you updated on the progress of the case”
