Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has shared heartbreaking details about the tragic death of her younger brother, Albert Cook Apuuli Tugume, who was killed during a violent robbery at his mobile money and agent banking shop in Ntinda on Thursday night.
According to Nyanjura, the 33-year-old Cook was attacked by gunmen shortly after 8:00 PM at his shop on Ntinda Kiwatule Road (Muvule, Central Road).
She described how Cook attempted to escape but was shot three times by the attackers, who then fled with his bag containing money, mobile agent lines, and bank agent machines.
“Cook attempted to take off from the gunmen, but he could only run so far,” Nyanjura explained.
“The cowards shot him three times and took off with his bag containing the money, mobile agent lines, and bank agent machines,” she said, adding, “The gunmen jumped on a waiting boda boda and fled.”
Barnabas death
Adding to the tragedy, Nyanjura revealed that a boda boda rider, identified as Barnabas, was shot while trying to intervene and save her brother. Barnabas was rushed to Mulago Hospital, but later died from his injuries.
“We are forever indebted to Barnabas for his heroic act. Sadly, he has also not made it,” Nyanjura said.
Luke Oweyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, described the incident as an “aggravated robbery.”
A church service for Albert Cook Tugume will be held today, Friday, at 2:00 PM at St. Luke Church Ntinda.
This devastating incident has shaken the family and the community, shedding light on the growing danger faced by mobile money operators in Uganda. Police investigations into the attack are ongoing.
