A recent survey on commercial sex workers in Uganda has revealed that poverty is the main reason many women turn to prostitution.
Many of these sex workers have several people who depend on them financially, putting a lot of pressure on them to earn money.
According to Daily Monitor, the challenges faced by these women are overwhelming as they struggle to meet their own needs, care for their dependants, and support their families. This tough situation has led even young girls, some as young as 15 years old, to enter prostitution to survive.
The Bio-Behavioural Survey, which focused on this issue, highlights that many of these young women are dealing with serious pressures. They often find themselves alone, trying to support themselves and their families, facing homelessness, and struggling to meet the financial demands of those who rely on them.
The survey was conducted by the Makerere University School of Public Health, with support from the Ministry of Health, PEPFAR, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It involved 7,947 sex workers and took place between 2021 and 2023.
The results show that the respondents aged 15 to 17 years were categorized as sexually exploited children, emphasizing the urgent need to address the root causes of this issue.
