In a groundbreaking development, the MK Movement, formerly linked with Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba, son of President Museveni and presidential advisor on special operations, has undergone a transformative evolution, emerging as the Patriotic League of Uganda in a recent announcement this week
This notable metamorphosis not only encompasses a change in nomenclature but also entails a comprehensive overhaul of its visual identity. The movement’s logo now proudly features a commanding lion, replacing Muhoozi’s photograph, while retaining the iconic Yellow color reminiscent of the NRM, a party that boasts a substantial portion of their supporters.
During a public declaration, Igara East MP Michael Mawanda, a member of Muhoozi’s Central Committee, disclosed that their primary focus has shifted from being a pressure group advocating for Muhoozi’s presidency to establishing themselves as a civic organization.
Under the new identity as the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), they aim to evolve into a civic organization dedicated to uniting Ugandans, instilling a sense of God-given citizenship, fostering national pride, promoting public service, combating corruption, preventing the squandering of public resources, and safeguarding the environment, as articulated by Mawanda.
Interestingly, unlike Bobi Wine’s People Power pressure group, which transitioned into a political party, the MK Movement has chosen to become a civic organization, at least for the time being. However, speculation abounds that they may eventually reposition themselves as a political party as the upcoming election season approaches.
Operating under the MK Movement banner, Muhoozi Kainerugaba has actively coordinated political rallies, connecting with the public, while his supporters persistently advocate for his political endorsement. Notably, Muhoozi, an army officer, faces restrictions on direct political engagement.
The transformation event attracted prominent figures, including key Museveni ministers like Minister Godfrey Kabyanga, Frank Tumwebaze, NRM’s Vice Chairperson Eastern Capt Mike Mukula, members of parliament, and fervent Muhoozi enthusiasts. This shift marks a significant chapter in the political landscape, hinting at potential future developments as the group navigates its newfound identity.
Congratulations for forming a new political party
