Embarking on the mission to seek President Yoweri Museveni’s blessing for his union with Natasha, his eldest daughter, Edwin Karugire found himself immersed in a captivating narrative at State House Nakasero in the late 1990s. Recounting this remarkable experience in a recently surfaced video, the city lawyer vividly painted the scene as he entered the opulent living room, greeted not only by President Museveni but also by First Lady Janet and Natasha, his then-paramour.

In a surprising turn of events, both Natasha and her mother gracefully exited the room, leaving Karugire alone with the Commander in Chief. This nerve-wracking encounter unfolded with Museveni engrossed in a silent screening of a World War II documentary, leading to what Karugire humorously dubbed the “longest 30 minutes of my life.” Despite a meticulously prepared presentation, Museveni interrupted, emphasizing the need for silence to preserve the sanctity of the ongoing documentary.

As the documentary’s climax neared, Museveni seamlessly shifted the conversation to Karugire’s relationship with alcohol. Caught in a state of nervous incoherence, Karugire found himself blurting out various responses simultaneously. The President took advantage of this moment to share wisdom on the consequences of alcohol consumption, highlighting its potential to render individuals unconscious—a consequence he attributed to his own lifelong abstinence.

In an unexpected twist, Museveni playfully challenged Karugire to a symbolic duel to prove his mettle. Skillfully declining the duel, Karugire navigated through this unique and unconventional meeting. Fast forward 24 years, and the union between Karugire and Natasha stands as a testament to enduring love. Affectionately known as Kukuru by her father, Natasha, born in 1976, holds the distinction of being President Museveni and Janet’s second-born and firstborn daughter.

The union between Natasha and Karugire, who served as the President’s Private Secretary at the time, culminated in 2000, drawing attention from prominent figures in Africa, including Aysha M. Al Gaddafi, the daughter of the former Libyan president, Muammar Gaddafi. In the present day, Edwin Karugire proudly stands as a founding partner at KK Advocates, one of Uganda’s premier law firms.

His enduring marriage to Natasha continues to serve as a living testament—a tribute to resilience in the face of unconventional beginnings. Beyond being an inspirational love story, it embodies the strength found in navigating life’s unpredictable twists and turns.
